Bande bi-métal
Une bande bimétallique est utilisée pour convertir un changement de température en déplacement mécanique. La bande se compose de deux bandes de métaux différents qui se développent à des vitesses différentes, car elles sont chauffées, généralement en acier et en cuivre, ou dans certains cas en acier et en laiton. Les bandes sont reliées entre elles à travers leur rivage, brasage ou soudage. Les différentes extensions forcent la bande plate à se pencher en sens contraire si elle est chauffée, et dans le sens inverse, si elle est refroidie en dessous de sa température initiale. Le métal avec le coefficient de dilatation thermique plus élevé se trouve sur le côté extérieur de la courbe lorsque la bande est chauffée et sur le côté intérieur lorsqu'il est refroidi. Le déplacement latéral de la bande est beaucoup plus grand que la petite extension longitudinale dans l'un ou l'autre des deux métaux. Cet effet est utilisé dans une gamme de dispositifs mécaniques et électriques. Dans certaines applications, la bande bimétallique est utilisée sous forme plate. Dans d'autres, il est enveloppé dans une bobine de compacité. La plus grande longueur de la version enroulée donne une sensibilité améliorée.
