Biotechnologie
La biotechnologie est l'utilisation de systèmes vivants et d'organismes pour développer ou fabriquer des produits utiles, ou «toute application technologique qui utilise des systèmes biologiques, des organismes vivants ou des dérivés de ceux-ci, pour fabriquer ou modifier des produits ou des procédés à usage spécifique». Selon les outils et les applications, il chevauche souvent avec les domaines de la bio-ingénierie et de l'ingénierie biomédicale. Pendant des milliers d'années, l'humanité a utilisé la biotechnologie dans l'agriculture, la production alimentaire et la médecine. Le terme lui-même est largement considéré comme inventé en 1919 par l'ingénieur hongrois Károly Ereky. À la fin du XXe et au début du 21e siècle, la biotechnologie s'est développée pour inclure des sciences nouvelles et diverses telles que la génomique, les technologies génétiques recombinantes, l'immunologie appliquée et le développement de thérapies pharmaceutiques et de tests diagnostiques.
