La bataille de Bosworth Field a été la dernière bataille importante des Guerres des Roses, la guerre civile entre les Maisons de Lancaster et York qui ont traversé l'Angleterre dans la seconde moitié du 15ème siècle. Lutté le 22 août 1485, la bataille fut gagnée par les Lancastriens. Leur chef Henry Tudor, comte de Richmond, par sa victoire est devenu le premier monarque anglais de la dynastie Tudor. Son adversaire, Richard III, le dernier roi de la Maison d'York, a été tué dans la bataille. Les historiens considèrent Bosworth Field comme marquant la fin de la dynastie de Plantagenet, ce qui en fait un moment décisif de l'histoire anglaise et gallois. Le règne de Richard a commencé en 1483 lorsqu'il a été remis le trône après que son neveu Edward V, âgé de douze ans, pour lequel il agissait comme lord protecteur, a été déclaré illégitime et inéligible pour le trône. Le garçon et son jeune frère ont disparu dans des circonstances mystérieuses, et le soutien de Richard a été érodé par les rumeurs de son implication dans la mort de sa femme.
