Burkina Faso
Le Burkina Faso, également connu sous son nom abrégé Burkina, est un pays sans littoral en Afrique de l'Ouest d'environ 274 200 kilomètres carrés. Il est entouré de six pays: le Mali au nord; Niger à l'est; Bénin au sud-est; Togo et Ghana au sud; Et la Côte d'Ivoire au sud-ouest. Sa capital est Ouagadougou. En 2010, sa population était estimée à un peu moins de 15,75 millions. Anciennement appelée République de Haute-Volta, le pays a été rebaptisé "Burkina Faso" le 4 août 1984 par le président Thomas Sankara, en utilisant un mot de chacune des deux langues principales du pays, Mòoré et Dioula. Figurativement, le Burkina, de Mòoré, peut être traduit par «hommes d'intégrité», alors que Faso signifie «patrie» à Dioula. "Burkina Faso" est compris comme "Terre des personnes droites" ou "Terre des gens honnêtes". Les habitants du Burkina Faso sont connus sous le nom de Burkinabè. Le français est une langue officielle du gouvernement et des affaires dans le pays. Entre 14 000 et 5000 av. J.-C., le Burkina Faso était peuplé par des chasseurs-cueilleurs dans la région nord-ouest du pays. Les colonies agricoles sont apparues entre 3600 et 2600 avant JC.
