Neutralité du carbone
La neutralité du carbone, ou l'empreinte de carbone nette nulle, se réfère à la réalisation d'émissions nettes de carbone zéro en équilibrant une quantité mesurée de carbone libérée avec un montant équivalent séquestré ou décalé, ou en achetant suffisamment de crédits carbone pour compenser la différence. Il est utilisé dans le contexte des processus de libération de dioxyde de carbone associés au transport, à la production d'énergie et aux procédés industriels tels que la production de carburant carbone neutre. Le concept de neutralité du carbone peut être étendu à d'autres gaz à effet de serre mesurés en termes d'équivalence de dioxyde de carbone - l'impact d'un GES sur l'atmosphère exprimé en quantité équivalente de CO2. Le terme «climat neutre» reflète l'inclusion plus large d'autres gaz à effet de serre dans les changements climatiques, même si le CO2 est le plus abondant, englobant d'autres gaz à effet de serre réglementés par le Protocole de Kyoto, à savoir: le méthane, l'oxyde nitreux, les hydrofluorocarbures, les perfluorocarbures et l'hexafluorure de soufre . Les deux termes sont utilisés de façon interchangeable tout au long de cet article.
