Castor et Pollux
Dans la mythologie grecque et romaine, Castor et Pollux ou Polydeuces étaient des freres jumelles, ensemble appelé Dioskouri. Leur mère était Leda, mais Castor était le fils mortel de Tyndareus, le roi de Sparte, et Pollux, le divin fils de Zeus, qui séduisit Leda sous le couvert d'un cygne. Bien que les récits de leur naissance soient variés, on dit parfois qu'ils sont nés d'un oeuf, ainsi que leurs soeurs jumelles Helen de Troy et Clytemnestra. En latin, les jumeaux sont également connus sous le nom de Gémeaux ou de Castores. Lorsque Castor a été tué, Pollux a demandé à Zeus de lui laisser partager sa propre immortalité avec son jumeau pour les garder ensemble, et ils ont été transformés en la constellation des Gémeaux. La paire était considérée comme les patrons des marins, à qui ils apparaissaient comme le feu de Saint-Elmo, et étaient également associés à l'équitation. Ils sont parfois appelés Tyndaridae ou Tyndarids, plus tard considérés comme une référence à leur père et à leur beau-père Tyndareus.
