Casuistry / kæʒuːɨstri /, ou un raisonnement fondé sur des cas, est une méthode d'éthique appliquée et de jurisprudence, souvent caractérisée comme une critique du raisonnement fondé sur des principes ou des règles. Le mot «casuistique» est dérivé du casus latin. Casuistry est un raisonnement utilisé pour résoudre les problèmes moraux en extrayant ou en étendant les règles théoriques à partir d'instances particulières et en appliquant ces règles à de nouvelles instances. Le terme est également couramment utilisé comme péjoratif pour critiquer l'utilisation d'un raisonnement intelligent mais inadéquat, surtout en ce qui concerne les questions morales. Le sens convenu de la «casuistique» est en train de se produire. Le terme peut être utilisé soit pour décrire une forme de raisonnement vraisemblablement acceptable, soit une forme de raisonnement inhérente et trompeuse. La plupart ou tous les dictionnaires philosophiques énumèrent le sens neutre comme première ou seule définition. D'autre part, le Oxford English Dictionary affirme que le mot «ften a été appliqué à une manière rigoureuse ou évasive de traiter les cas de devoirs difficiles». Ses références textuelles, à l'exception de certains usages techniques, sont constamment péjoratives.
