Cephalochordate
Cephalochordata est un sous-phylum chordate défini par la présence d'une notocorde qui persiste tout au long de la vie. Il est représenté dans les océans modernes par les lancelets. Avec sa sœur phylum Urochordata, Cephalochordata peut être classé comme appartenant au taxon Protochordata. Les caractéristiques de Cephalochordata sont qu'ils sont des animaux marins, segmentés, et qu'ils possèdent des corps allongés avec une notocorde qui prolonge la longueur du corps et entourent la bouche pour obtenir de la nourriture. Dans cephalochordata, la notocorde s'étend de la tête à la queue et elle persiste tout au long de leur vie. Les membres de ce sous-phylum sont très petits et n'ont pas de pièces difficiles, ce qui rend leurs fossiles difficiles à trouver. Des espèces fossilisées ont été trouvées dans des roches très anciennes prédominant les vertébrés. Il existe des schistes fossiles célèbres du bas-cendré du Cambrien moyen de la Colombie-Britannique, qui a produit des fossiles Pikaia. Récemment, un fossile céphalochordate différent a été trouvé dans le sud de la Chine. Il date du début de la période cambrienne et est le premier fossil connu de la lignée céphalochordate. Ils ont de nombreuses fentes branchiales et ont des sexes séparés.
