Chartisme
Le chartisme était un mouvement ouvrier pour la réforme politique en Grande-Bretagne qui existait de 1838 à 1850 et qui prit son nom de la Charte du peuple de 1838. Il s'agissait d'un mouvement de protestation national, avec des bastions de soutien particulières au nord de l'Angleterre, à l'est Midlands, les Poteries, le Black Country et le sud du Pays de Galles. L'appui au mouvement a été le plus élevé en 1839, 1842 et 1848, lorsque des pétitions signées par des millions de travailleurs ont été présentées à la Chambre des communes. La stratégie employée était d'utiliser l'ampleur du soutien de ces pétitions et les réunions de masse qui l'accompagnaient ont montré que la pression sur les politiciens pour accorder le suffrage masculin. Le charisme s'appuyait ainsi sur des méthodes constitutionnelles pour atteindre ses objectifs, bien qu'il y en eût participé à des activités insurrectionnelles, notamment au sud du Pays de Galles et au Yorkshire. La Charte du peuple a appelé à six réformes pour rendre le système politique plus démocratique: ▪ Un vote pour chaque homme de vingt et un ans, d'esprit sain et ne subit pas de châtiment pour un crime. ▪ Le bulletin de vote secret - Pour protéger l'électeur dans l'exercice de son vote.
