Le chauvinisme, dans son sens original, est un patriotisme exagéré et une croyance belligérante dans la supériorité et la gloire nationales. Son éponyme est un soldat français apparemment apocryphe Nicolas Chauvin, gravement blessé dans les guerres napoléoniennes. Il a reçu une pension pour ses blessures, mais il ne suffisait pas de vivre. Après avoir abdiqué Napoléon, Chauvin était un bonapartiste fanatique malgré l'impopularité de cette vue dans Bourbon Restoration France. Son dévouement aveugle à sa cause, malgré sa négligence par sa faction et son harcèlement par ses ennemis, a commencé l'utilisation du terme. Par extension, il est venu d'inclure une partisanerie extrême et déraisonnable au nom de n'importe quel groupe auquel l'on appartient, surtout lorsque la partisanerie inclut la malveillance et la haine envers les groupes rivaux. Le jingoisme est la forme parallèle britannique de ce mot français, mais sa signification n'a pas dépassé le nationalisme de la même manière que le mot chauvinisme.
