Christchurch
Christchurch est la plus grande ville de l'île du Sud de la Nouvelle-Zélande et la troisième zone urbaine la plus peuplée du pays. Il se trouve à un tiers de la côte est de l'île du Sud, juste au nord de la péninsule de Banks, elle-même, depuis 2006, se trouve dans les limites formelles de Christchurch. La population de la ville de Christchurch au recensement du 5 mars 2013 était de 341 469. La ville a été nommée par l'Association Canterbury, qui a installé la province environnante de Canterbury. Le nom de Christchurch a été convenu lors de la première réunion de l'association le 27 mars 1848. John Robert Godley, qui avait assisté à Christ Church, Oxford, l'a suggéré. Certains premiers écrivains ont appelé la ville Christ Church, mais il a été enregistré comme Christchurch dans le procès-verbal du comité de gestion de l'association. Christchurch est devenu une ville par Royal Charter le 31 juillet 1856, ce qui en fait la ville la plus ancienne établie en Nouvelle-Zélande. I went to a state school in Christchurch, New Zealand, and then straight on to the University of Canterbury. But I worked part-time all the way through high school: first with a paper round, then at a fast-food outlet, a video store and a hardware store.
I grew up on the South Island of New Zealand, in a city chosen and beloved by my parents for its proximity to the mountains - Christchurch is two hours distant from the worn saddle of Arthur's Pass, the mountain village that was and is my father's spiritual touchstone, his chapel and cathedral in the wild.
