Un composant central de la cochlée est l'organe de Corti, organe sensoriel de l'ouïe, qui est réparti le long de la cloison séparant les chambres de fluide dans le tube conique enroulé de la cochlée. Le nom est dérivé du latin pour escargot qui, à son tour, provient des kokhlias κοχλίας grecs, de κόχλος kokhlos en référence à sa forme enroulée; La cochlée est enroulée chez les mammifères à l'exception des monotremes.
