Colloïde
Un colloïde est une substance dispersée microscopiquement dans une autre substance. Les particules en phase dispersée ont un diamètre compris entre environ 1 et 1000 nanomètres. De telles particules sont normalement facilement visibles dans un microscope optique, bien qu'à la plus petite gamme de taille, un ultramicroscope ou un microscope électronique peut être nécessaire. Les mélanges homogènes avec une phase dispersée dans cette gamme de taille peuvent être appelés aérosols colloïdaux, émulsions colloïdales, mousses colloïdales, dispersions colloïdales ou hydrosols. Les particules ou les gouttelettes en phase dispersée sont affectées en grande partie par la chimie de surface présente dans le colloïde. Certains colloïdes sont translucides à cause de l'effet Tyndall, qui est la diffusion de la lumière par les particules dans le colloïde. D'autres colloïdes peuvent être opaques ou avoir une légère couleur. Les suspensions colloïdales font l'objet de l'interface et de la science colloïdale.
