Collotype
Collotype est un procédé photographique à base de dichromates inventé par Alphonse Poitevin en 1856. Il a été utilisé pour l'impression mécanique à grande échelle avant l'existence d'une lithographie décalée moins coûteuse. Il peut produire des résultats difficiles à distinguer des tirages photographiques à base de métal en raison de leurs réticulations microscopiquement fines qui comprennent l'image. Beaucoup de cartes postales anciennes sont collotypes. Bien qu'il ne s'agisse plus d'un processus commercial, ses possibilités de photographie artistique ont d'abord été employées aux États-Unis par Alfred Stieglitz. La plaque de collotype est réalisée en recouvrant une plaque de verre ou de métal avec un substrat composé de gélatine ou d'un autre colloïde et de le durcir. Ensuite, il est revêtu d'une épaisse couche de gélatine dichromatée et séché soigneusement à une température contrôlée afin de «réticuler» ou se décompose en un motif finement grainé lorsqu'il est lavé plus tard dans environ 16 ° C d'eau. La plaque est alors exposée en contact avec le négatif à l'aide d'une source de lumière ultraviolette qui modifie la capacité de la gélatine exposée à absorber l'eau plus tard. La plaque est développée en lavant soigneusement le sel de dichromate et séchée sans chaleur.
