En mathématiques, une section conique est une courbe obtenue comme intersection d'un cône avec un plan. Dans la géométrie analytique, une conique peut être définie comme une courbe algébrique plane de degré 2. Il existe un certain nombre d'autres définitions géométriques possibles. L'un des plus utiles, en ce sens qu'il ne concerne que l'avion, c'est qu'une conique se compose de ces points dont les distances à un certain point, appelées focalisation, et une ligne, appelée une directrice, sont dans un rapport fixe, appelé l'excentricité. Traditionnellement, les trois types de sections coniques sont l'hyperbole, la parabole et l'ellipse. Le cercle est un cas particulier de l'ellipse, et il s'intéresse suffisamment à son propre droit qu'il est parfois appelé le quatrième type de section conique. Le type de conique correspond à son excentricité, ceux qui ont une excentricité inférieure à 1 étant des ellipses, ceux qui ont une excentricité égale à 1 étant des paraboles et ceux qui ont une excentricité supérieure à 1 étant des hyperboles. Dans la définition focus-directrix d'une conique, le cercle est un cas limitant avec l'excentricité 0. Dans la géométrie moderne, certains cas dégénérés, tels que l'union de deux lignes, sont également inclus en coniques.
