Il est originaire de l'Oregon, de la Californie, de l'Arizona, de l'Utah et de la Basse-Californie, et se trouve dans les prairies ouvertes et les sols sablonneux. Ils ont une longueur de 1 à 9 centimètres. L'inflorescence est une seule fleur qui se développe à partir d'une axil de la feuille ou de la pointe de la tige.
