Darius III
Darius III, nommé à l'origine Artashata et appelé Codomannus par les Grecs, fut le dernier roi de l'Empire achéménide de Perse de 336 av. J.-C. à 330 av. J.-C. Artashata a adopté Darius comme un nom dynastique. Après Artaxerxes III de Perse et tous ses fils ont été tués par le vizir Bagoas, le vizir a installé un cousin d'Artaxerxes III, Artashata, sur le trône persan comme Darius III. Quand Darius a essayé d'agir indépendamment du vizir, Bagoas a essayé de l'empoisonner, mais Darius a été averti et obligé Bagoas à boire le poison lui-même. Le nouveau roi se trouva en contrôle d'un empire instable, dont de grandes portions étaient régies par des satraffes jaloux et peu fiables et habités par des sujets mécontents et rebelles. Cependant, il manquait de compétences et d'expérience pour faire face à ces problèmes. En 334 av. J.-C., Alexandre le Grand a commencé son invasion de l'Empire perse et a ensuite vaincu les Perses dans un certain nombre de batailles avant de pilonner et de détruire la capitale Persépolis, par le feu, en 331 av. Avec l'Empire Persique maintenant, sous le contrôle d'Alexandre, Alexandre a ensuite décidé de poursuivre Darius.
