Delphi est à la fois un site archéologique et une ville moderne en Grèce sur l'éperon sud-ouest du mont Parnassus dans la vallée de Phocis. Dans les mythes datant de la période classique de la Grèce antique, le site de Delphes était déterminé par Zeus lorsqu'il cherchait à trouver le centre de sa «Grand-mère Terre». Il a envoyé deux aigles volant des extrémités de l'est et de l'ouest, et le chemin des aigles traversa Delphes où se trouvaient les omphalos ou le nombril de Gaïa. Les mythes antérieurs incluent des traditions selon lesquelles Pythia, ou l'oracle de Delphic, était déjà le site d'un oracle important dans le monde grec préclassique et, redédié, a servi de site principal pendant les temps classiques pour le culte du dieu Apollo après avoir tué Python , "Un dragon" qui habitait là-bas et protégeait le nombril de la Terre. "Python" est réclamé par certains pour être le nom d'origine du site en reconnaissance de Python que Apollo a vaincu. L'hymne homérique à Delphic Apollo a rappelé que l'ancien nom de ce site avait été Krisa.
