Les Earwigs constituent l'ordre des insectes Dermaptera et se trouvent dans les Amériques, en Afrique, en Eurasie, en Australie et en Nouvelle-Zélande. Avec environ 2 000 espèces dans 12 familles, elles sont l'une des plus petites commandes d'insectes. Les oreilles ont des cercius caractéristiques, une paire de pinces à pinces sur leur abdomen et des ailes membranaires pliées sous des ailes courtes, d'où le nom de l'ordre scientifique, les «ailes de peau». Certains groupes sont de minuscules parasites chez les mammifères et n'ont pas les pinces typiques. Earwigs utilise rarement leur capacité de voler. Les oreillettes sont nocturnes; Ils se cachent souvent dans de petites fissures humides pendant la journée et sont actifs la nuit, se nourrissent d'une grande variété d'insectes et de plantes. Les dommages causés par le feuillage, les fleurs et diverses cultures sont habituellement attribués à des oreilles, en particulier à la Forficula auricularia commune. Les oreilles ont cinq mates dans l'année avant qu'elles ne deviennent des adultes. De nombreuses espèces d'érythème présentent des soins maternels, ce qui est rare chez les insectes. Les oreilles femelles peuvent s'occuper de leurs œufs, et même après leur éclosion alors que les nymphes continueraient à surveiller la progéniture jusqu'à leur seconde mue. Comme les nymphes se déplacent, le dimorphisme sexuel tel que les différences dans les formes pinces commence à apparaître.
