Le déterminisme est la position philosophique qui, pour chaque événement, y compris l'action humaine, existe des conditions qui ne peuvent entraîner aucun autre événement. Les théories déterministes tout au long de l'histoire de la philosophie proviennent de motifs et de considérations diverses et parfois chevauchants. Le déterminisme est souvent considéré comme un déterminisme causal, qui dans la physique est connu comme cause-et-effet. C'est le concept selon lequel les événements dans un paradigme donné sont liés par la causalité de telle sorte que tout état soit complètement déterminé par les états antérieurs. Cette signification peut être distinguée des autres variétés de déterminisme mentionnées ci-dessous. D'autres débats concernent souvent la portée de systèmes déterminés, certains estiment que l'univers entier est un système déterminé unique et d'autres identifient d'autres systèmes déterminés plus limités.
