Diapir
Un diapir est un type d'intrusion dans lequel un matériau plus mobile et plus déformable est forcé dans des roches recouvrantes fragiles. En fonction de l'environnement tectonique, les diapirs peuvent aller des structures idéales en forme de champignon Rayleigh-Taylor-instabilité dans des régions à faible contrainte tectonique comme dans le Golfe du Mexique pour réduire les digues de matériaux qui se déplacent le long des fractures induites par tectonisation dans la roche environnante. Le terme a été introduit par le géologue roumain Ludovic Mrazek, qui a été le premier à comprendre le principe de l'intrusion de sel et de la plasticité. Le terme "diapir" peut être appliqué à des structures ignées, mais il est plus couramment appliqué à des matériaux non ignifugés, relativement froids, tels que des dômes de sel et des diachières de boue. En plus des observations terrestres, le diapirisme est censé se produire sur la lune Triton de Neptune, la lune Europa de Jupiter, la lune Enceladus de Saturne et la lune Miranda d'Uranus. Les diapires s'intègrent généralement verticalement vers le haut le long des fractures ou des zones de faiblesse structurelle à travers des roches recouvrantes plus denses en raison du contraste de densité entre une masse de roches moins dense et plus basse et des roches densément recouvrantes. Le contraste de densité se manifeste comme une force de flottabilité.
