L'informatique distribuée est un domaine de l'informatique qui étudie les systèmes distribués. Un système distribué est un système logiciel dans lequel les composants situés sur des ordinateurs en réseau communiquent et coordonnent leurs actions en passant des messages. Les composants interagissent les uns avec les autres afin d'atteindre un objectif commun. Trois caractéristiques importantes des systèmes distribués sont: la concurrence des composants, le manque d'horloge mondiale et l'échec indépendant des composants. Des exemples de systèmes distribués varient selon les systèmes basés sur les SOA et les jeux en ligne massivement multijoueurs aux applications peer-to-peer. Un programme informatique qui s'exécute dans un système distribué s'appelle un programme distribué, et la programmation distribuée est le processus d'écriture de ces programmes. Il existe de nombreuses alternatives pour le mécanisme de transmission de message, y compris les connecteurs RPC et les files d'attente de messages. Un objectif important et un défi des systèmes distribués est la transparence de l'emplacement. L'informatique distribuée fait également référence à l'utilisation de systèmes distribués pour résoudre des problèmes de calcul.
