John Dos Passos
John Roderigo Dos Passos était un romancier américain radical et un artiste actif dans la première moitié du vingtième siècle. Il est né à Chicago, en Illinois, et il est allé au collège Harvard, diplômé en 1916. Il a été bien voyagé, en visite en Europe et au Moyen-Orient, où il a appris la littérature, l'art et l'architecture. Au cours de la Première Guerre mondiale, il a été membre du American Volunteer Motor Ambulance Corps à Paris et en Italie, puis se sont joints au corps médical de l'armée américaine. En 1920, il a publié son premier roman, One Man's Initiation: 1917, et en 1925, son Manhattan Transfer est devenu un succès commercial. En 1928, il est allé à l'Union soviétique pour étudier le socialisme, et plus tard est devenu un participant principal dans le Congrès des premiers écrivains américains d'avril 1935 parrainé par la Ligue communiste des écrivains américains. Il était en Espagne en 1937 pendant la guerre civile espagnole, alors que le meurtre du bon ami José Robles aggravait son attitude envers le communisme et rompit sa relation avec son écrivain Ernest Hemingway. Il est surtout connu pour sa trilogie américaine louée par les critiques, composée des romans The 42nd Parallel, 1919 et The Big Money.
