Syndrome de Down
Le syndrome de Down ou le syndrome de Down, également connu sous le nom de trisomie 21, est un trouble génétique causé par la présence de tout ou partie d'une troisième copie du chromosome 21. Il est généralement associé à des retards de croissance physique, des traits faciaux caractéristiques et un handicap intellectuel léger à modéré . Le QI moyen d'un jeune adulte avec le syndrome de Down est de 50 ans, ce qui équivaut à l'âge mental d'un enfant de 8 ou 9 ans, mais cela varie considérablement. Le syndrome de Down peut être identifié pendant la grossesse par un dépistage prénatal suivi d'un test de diagnostic ou après la naissance par observation directe et tests génétiques. Depuis l'introduction du dépistage, les grossesses diagnostiquées se terminent souvent. Un dépistage régulier pour les problèmes de santé communs au syndrome de Down est recommandé tout au long de la vie de la personne. L'éducation et les soins appropriés ont été démontrés pour améliorer la qualité de vie. Certains enfants atteints de syndrome de Down sont éduqués dans des cours typiques d'écoles alors que d'autres nécessitent une formation plus spécialisée. Certaines personnes atteintes du syndrome de Down sont diplômées du secondaire et quelques études postsecondaires fréquentes.
