Huile de séchage
Une huile de séchage est une huile qui durcit à un film solide et solide après une période d'exposition à l'air. L'huile durcit à travers une réaction chimique dans laquelle les composants se réticulent par l'action de l'oxygène. Les huiles de séchage sont un élément clé de la peinture à l'huile et des vernis. Certaines huiles de séchage couramment utilisées comprennent l'huile de lin, l'huile de tung, l'huile de graine de pavot, l'huile de perilla et l'huile de noix. Leur utilisation a diminué au cours des dernières décennies, puisqu'elles ont été remplacées par des résines alkydes et d'autres liants. Étant donné que l'oxydation est la clé du durcissement de ces huiles, celles qui sont sensibles au séchage chimique ne sont souvent pas adaptées à la cuisson et sont également très susceptibles de devenir rances en raison de l'auto-oxydation, processus par lequel les aliments gras développent des saveurs. Les chiffons, les tissus et le papier saturé avec des huiles de séchage peuvent brûler spontanément en quelques heures, en raison de l'accumulation de chaleur dégagée pendant le processus d'oxydation.
