Elaiosome
Les élasosomes sont des structures charnues qui sont attachées aux graines de nombreuses espèces végétales. L'elaiosome est riche en lipides et en protéines, et peut avoir une forme variée. Beaucoup de plantes ont des elaiosomes qui attirent les fourmis, qui prennent la graine dans leur nid et nourrissent l'elaiosome de leurs larves. Une fois que les larves ont consommé l'elaiosome, les fourmis prennent la graine dans leur aire d'élimination des déchets, qui est riche en nutriments provenant des germes et des cadavres, où les graines germent. Ce type de dispersion de graines est appelé myrchocchorie de la «fourmi» et de la «dispersion» grecque. Ce type de relation symbiotique semble être mutualiste, plus spécifiquement le mutualisme dispersif selon Ricklefs, R.E., car la plante bénéficie parce que ses graines sont dispersées dans des sites de germination favorables, et aussi parce qu'elle est plantée par les fourmis. Les élasosomes se développent de diverses façons soit à partir de tissus de graines, soit à partir de tissus de fruits. Les diverses origines et les voies de développement apparemment appartiennent à la même fonction principale, c'est-à-dire attirer des fourmis.
