Chaîne de transport d'électrons
Une chaîne de transport d'électrons est une série de composés qui transfèrent des électrons de donneurs d'électrons à des accepteurs d'électrons via des réactions redox et couplent ce transfert d'électrons avec le transfert de protons à travers une membrane. Cela crée un gradient de protons électrochimique qui entraîne la synthèse de l'ATP, ou la génération d'énergie chimique sous forme d'adénosine triphosphate. Les chaînes de transport d'électrons sont utilisées pour extraire de l'énergie par des réactions redox provenant de la lumière du soleil en photosynthèse ou, par exemple, dans le cas de l'oxydation des sucres, de la respiration cellulaire. Dans les eucaryotes, une importante chaîne de transport d'électrons se trouve dans la membrane mitochondriale interne où elle sert de site de phosphorylation oxydante par l'utilisation d'ATP synthase. On le trouve également dans la membrane thylakoïde du chloroplaste dans les eucaryotes photosynthétiques. Dans les bactéries, la chaîne de transport d'électrons est située dans leur membrane cellulaire. Dans les chloroplastes, la lumière entraîne la conversion de l'eau en oxygène et NADP + en NADPH avec transfert d'ions H + à travers les membranes de chloroplastes.
