La première définition de l'ergatif dans le dictionnaire désigne un type de verbe qui prend le même nom que l'objet direct ou le sujet, avec un sens équivalent. Ainsi, "fusible" est un verbe ergatif: "Il a fusionné les lumières" et "Les lumières fusionnées" ont une signification équivalente. L'autre définition de ergatif désigne un cas de noms dans certaines langues, par exemple, l'inuktitut ou le basque, marquant un nom utilisé indifféremment comme l'objet direct d'un verbe transitif ou le sujet d'un verbe intransitif. Ergative désigne également un langage qui a des verbes ergatifs ou des noms ergatifs.
