Escadrille
Une escadrille est un type d'unité militaire, le plus souvent retrouvé dans les forces aériennes de certains pays francophones. Alors que le terme est souvent traduit en anglais comme «escadron», une escadrille était à l'origine une unité plus petite. Les premières escadrilles d'air ont été formées en France avant la Première Guerre mondiale, en 1912. Ils étaient initialement un groupe d'avions peu définis capable de tâches similaires, dans la plupart des cas, pas plus de six avions dans chacun d'eux. Au cours de la guerre, l'escadrille est devenue l'unité indépendante de base de l'aviation au sein des forces armées françaises. Une escadrille était une unité homogène, armée d'un seul type d'avion, avec un personnel permanent chargé de vol et de terrain, un transport motorisé et des hangars de tente. Au milieu de 1915, l'Armee de l'Air était de 119 escadrilles de 10 avions chacun: 14 des combattants, 50 des bombardiers et les autres unités de reconnaissance, de détection et de communication. Alors que les escadrilles fonctionnaient initialement de manière indépendante, pendant la bataille de Verdun, les escadrilles chasseur ont été formées en formations plus grandes, pour faciliter la coordination.
