On peut croire à un expert, en vertu de ses titres de compétences, de sa formation, de son éducation, de sa profession, de sa publication ou de son expérience, d'avoir une connaissance particulière d'un sujet au-delà de celui de la personne moyenne, suffisant pour que les autres puissent se fier officiellement (et légalement) à l'opinion de l'individu. Historiquement, un expert était appelé sauge (Sophos). L'individu était habituellement un penseur profond distingué pour la sagesse et le bon jugement. Les experts ont une expérience prolongée ou intense à travers la pratique et l'éducation dans un domaine particulier.
