Expressionnisme
L'expressionnisme était un mouvement moderniste, d'abord dans la poésie et la peinture, originaire d'Allemagne au début du XXe siècle. Son trait typique est de présenter le monde uniquement à partir d'une perspective subjective, le déformant radicalement pour l'effet émotionnel afin d'évoquer des humeurs ou des idées. Les artistes expressionnistes ont cherché à exprimer leur sens ou leur expérience émotionnelle plutôt que leur réalité physique. L'expressionnisme a été développé comme un style avant-gardiste avant la Première Guerre mondiale. Il est resté populaire pendant la République de Weimar, en particulier à Berlin. Le style s'étend à une large gamme d'arts, y compris l'architecture expressionniste, la peinture, la littérature, le théâtre, la danse, le cinéma et la musique. Le terme suggère parfois l'angoisse. Dans un sens général, des peintres comme Matthias Grünewald et El Greco sont parfois qualifiés d'expressionnistes, mais dans la pratique, le terme est principalement appliqué aux oeuvres du XXe siècle. L'accent exprimateur sur la perspective individuelle a été caractérisé comme une réaction au positivisme et à d'autres styles artistiques comme le naturalisme et l'impressionnisme.
