La guerre des prix est une «concurrence commerciale caractérisée par la réduction répétée des prix inférieurs à ceux des concurrents». Un concurrent abaissera son prix, puis d'autres réduiront leurs prix pour qu'ils correspondent. Si l'un d'entre eux réduit encore son prix, une nouvelle série de réductions commence. À court terme, les guerres de prix sont bonnes pour les acheteurs, qui peuvent profiter des prix plus bas. Souvent, ils ne sont pas bons pour les entreprises impliquées parce que les prix inférieurs réduisent les marges bénéficiaires et peuvent menacer leur survie. À moyen et à long terme, les guerres de prix peuvent être bonnes pour les entreprises dominantes de l'industrie. En règle générale, les entreprises plus petites, plus marginales, ne peuvent pas concurrencer et doivent se fermer. Les entreprises restantes absorbent la part de marché de ceux qui ont fermé. Les vrais perdants sont alors les entreprises marginales et leurs investisseurs. À long terme, le consommateur peut aussi perdre. Avec moins d'entreprises dans l'industrie, les prix ont tendance à augmenter, parfois plus élevés qu'avant le début de la guerre des prix.
