Quinzième
En musique, une quinzième ou une double octave, abrégée 15ma, est l'intervalle entre une note musicale et une autre avec un quart de longueur d'onde ou quadruple la fréquence. La quatrième harmonique, c'est deux octaves. On l'appelle quinzième parce que, dans l'échelle diatonique, il y a 15 notes entre elles si l'on compte les deux extrémités. Deux octaves ne font pas un seizième, mais une quinzième. Dans d'autres contextes, le terme «deux octaves» est susceptible d'être utilisé. Par exemple, si une note a une fréquence de 400 Hz, la note un quinzième ci-dessus est à 1600 Hz, et la note un quinzième ci-dessous est à 100 Hz. Le rapport des fréquences de deux notes à quinzième est donc de 4: 1. Exemple de deux mêmes notes exprimées régulièrement, dans un support de 8va et dans un support de 15ma. Comme le quinzième est un multiple d'octaves, l'oreille humaine a tendance à entendre les deux notes comme étant essentiellement "identiques", comme c'est l'octave. Comme l'octave, dans le système occidental de notation musicale, les notes à dix-vingts d'entre elles reçoivent le même nom: le nom d'une note, une octave au-dessus de A, est également A.
