La médecine légale est la méthode scientifique consistant à recueillir et à examiner des informations sur le passé. Ceci est particulièrement important dans l'application de la loi où la médecine légale est faite en matière de droit pénal ou civil, mais la médecine légale est également menée dans d'autres domaines, tels que l'astronomie, l'archéologie, la biologie et la géologie pour enquêter sur les antécédents. Aux États-Unis d'Amérique, il y a plus de 12 000 techniciens en médecine légale, à partir de 2010. Le terme «médecine légale» provient du latin forēnsis, c'est-à-dire «du ou avant le forum». À l'époque romaine, une accusation criminelle signifiait la présentation de l'affaire devant un groupe d'individus publics dans le forum. La personne accusée du crime et l'accusateur prononceraient des discours fondés sur le côté de l'histoire. L'individu avec le meilleur argument et la livraison déterminerait l'issue de l'affaire. Cette origine est la source des deux usages modernes du terme forensique - en tant que forme de preuve juridique et comme catégorie de présentation publique.

Most crime fiction, no matter how 'hard-boiled' or bloodily forensic, is essentially sentimental, for most crime writers are disappointed romantics.
