La gériatrie ou la médecine gériatrique est une spécialité axée sur les soins de santé des personnes âgées. Il vise à promouvoir la santé en empêchant et en traitant les maladies et les handicaps chez les personnes âgées. Il n'y a pas d'âge défini auquel les patients peuvent être sous la garde d'un gériatre ou d'un médecin gériatrique, un médecin spécialisé dans les soins aux personnes âgées. Plutôt, cette décision est déterminée par les besoins individuels du patient et la disponibilité d'un spécialiste. La gériatrie, le soin des personnes âgées, diffère de la gérontologie qui est l'étude du processus de vieillissement lui-même. Le terme gériatrie provient du grec γέρων geron signifiant «vieil homme», et ιατρός iatros signifiant «guérisseur». Cependant, la gériatrie est parfois appelée gérontologie médicale.
