Glochidium
Le glochidium est un stade larvaire microscopique de certaines moules d'eau douce, des mollusques aquatiques bivalves dans les familles Unionidae et Margaritiferidae, les moules des rivières et les moules de perles d'eau douce européennes. Cette forme de larve a des crochets, ce qui lui permet de s'attacher aux poissons pendant une période avant de se détacher et tombe sur le substrat et prend la forme typique d'une moule juvénile. Étant donné qu'un poisson est actif et qui nage librement, ce processus aide à distribuer les espèces de moules dans les zones d'habitat potentielles, ce qui ne peut être autrement. Avant que l'origine de cette forme larvaire soit comprise, elle a été qualifiée de «vers parasite» sur l'hôte de poisson, bien que dans des circonstances normales, les glochidia ne nuisent pas aux poissons. La surexposition ou les infections lourdes de glochidia peuvent toutefois diminuer considérablement la capacité de l'hôte à respirer. C'est parce que le tissu qui est fortement recouvert de glochidia finira par se transformer en tissu cicatriciel et perdre ses fonctionnalités. Certaines moules dans les Unionidae, telles que Ptychobranchus fasciolaris et P. greenii, libèrent leur glochidia dans des paquets mucilagineux appelés conglutinants.
