Great Auk
Le grand auk était un oiseau sans vol de la famille alcid qui s'est éteint au milieu du 19ème siècle. C'était la seule espèce moderne du genre Pinguinus, un groupe d'oiseaux qui comprenait auparavant une autre espèce de cheval géant sans vol de la région de l'océan Atlantique. Il a été élevé sur des îles rocheuses et isolées avec un accès facile à l'océan et un approvisionnement alimentaire abondant, une rareté de nature qui ne fournissait que quelques sites de reproduction pour les auks. Lorsqu'ils ne se reproduisent pas, les Auks ont passé leur temps à se nourrir dans les eaux de l'Atlantique Nord, allant au sud du nord de l'Espagne et aussi autour des côtes du Canada, du Groenland, de l'Islande, des îles Féroé, de la Norvège, de l'Irlande et de la Grande-Bretagne. Le grand auk était de 75 à 85 centimètres de hauteur et pesait environ 5 kilogrammes, ce qui en fait le plus grand membre de la famille Alcid. Il avait un dos noir et un ventre blanc. Le bec noir était lourd et accroché, avec des rainures sur sa surface. Pendant l'été, le plumage du grand auk a montré un patch blanc sur chaque œil. En hiver, le Auk a perdu ces patchs, au lieu de développer une bande blanche s'étendant entre les yeux. Les ailes n'avaient que 15 centimètres de long, rendant l'oiseau sans vol.
