La période hellénistique est la période de l'histoire grecque et méditerranéenne ancienne entre la mort d'Alexandre le Grand en 323 av. J.-C. et l'émergence de l'Empire romain comme signifié par la bataille d'Actium en 31 av. J.-C. et la conquête subséquente de l'Egypte Ptolémaïque en 30 av. À cette époque, l'influence et le pouvoir culturels grecs étaient à son apogée en Europe, en Afrique et en Asie, connaissant une prospérité et des progrès dans les arts, l'exploration, la littérature, le théâtre, l'architecture, la musique, les mathématiques, la philosophie et la science. Après les aventures d'Alexandre le Grand dans l'Empire perse, des royaumes hellénistiques ont été établis dans tout le sud-ouest de l'Asie et l'Afrique du Nord-Est. Cela a entraîné l'exportation de la culture et de la langue grecques vers ces nouveaux royaumes et, en outre, les colons grecs eux-mêmes. De même, ces nouveaux royaumes ont été influencés par les cultures indigènes, en adoptant des pratiques locales, bénéfiques, nécessaires ou pratiques.
