Un système de détermination du sexe est un système biologique qui détermine le développement des caractéristiques sexuelles dans un organisme. La plupart des organismes sexuels ont deux sexes. Parfois, il existe des hermaphrodites à la place d'un ou des deux sexes. Il existe également certaines espèces qui ne sont qu'un sexe en raison de la parthénogenèse, l'acte d'une femme reproduisant sans fécondation. La différenciation sexuelle est généralement déclenchée par un gène principal, avec une multitude d'autres gènes qui suivent un effet domino. Dans d'autres cas, le sexe est déterminé par des variables environnementales ou des variables sociales.
