Homère
Dans la tradition classique occidentale, Homère est l'auteur de l'Iliade et de l'Odyssée, et est vénéré comme le plus grand des poètes épiques d'origine grecque. Ces épopées sont au début du canon occidental de la littérature et ont eu une influence énorme sur l'histoire de la littérature. Il est inconnu de savoir si et quand il a vécu. Hérodote estime que Homère a vécu 400 ans avant son propre temps, ce qui le placerait vers 850 av. J.-C., tandis que d'autres sources anciennes prétendent qu'il vivait beaucoup plus près du temps supposé de la guerre de Troie, au début du 12ème siècle av. La plupart des chercheurs modernes placent Homer au VIIe ou VIIIe siècle av. L'influence formative des épopées homériques dans la formation de la culture grecque a été largement reconnue, et Homère a été qualifié de professeur de Grèce. Les travaux d'Homère, qui représentent environ cinquante pour cent des discours, ont fourni des modèles de discours et d'écriture persuasifs qui ont été émulés dans les mondes grecs anciens et médiévaux. Fragments of Homer représentent près de la moitié de toutes les trouvailles identifiables du papyrus grec.
