Handbook of Commercial Catalysts: Heterogeneous Catalysts
Hydrogenolysis is defined as the splitting of a bond with simultaneous addition of
a hydrogen atom to each of the fragments. Based on commercial production, the
major uses of this reaction occur in the petroleum and natural fatty-oil industries.
Catalytic hydrogenolysis is particularly useful for deprotecting water-soluble
alcohols since workup simply involves filtration to remove the catalyst (FIRE
HAZARD: the catalyst may ignite filter paper when dry) and evaporation of the
solvent.
Philip J. Kocienski, 2005

Catalysis of Organic Reactions
Ethyl acetate was a poorer solvent than methanol for hydrogenolysis. Addition of
acetic acid did not appear to be a factor in the rate of hydrogenolysis. However,
adding hydrochloric acid to the reaction inhibited the hydrogenolysis reaction.
