La fusion par confinement inerte est un type de recherche sur l'énergie de fusion qui tente d'initier des réactions de fusion nucléaire en chauffant et en comprimant une cible de carburant, typiquement sous la forme d'une pastille qui contient le plus souvent un mélange de deutérium et de tritium. Pour comprimer et chauffer le carburant, l'énergie est livrée à la couche extérieure de la cible en utilisant des rayons de haute puissance de lumière laser, d'électrons ou d'ions, bien que pour diverses raisons, presque tous les dispositifs ICF à ce jour utilisent des lasers. La couche extérieure chauffée explose vers l'extérieur, produisant une force de réaction contre le reste de la cible, l'accélérant vers l'intérieur, en comprimant la cible. Ce processus est conçu pour créer des ondes de choc qui se déplacent vers l'intérieur à travers la cible. Un ensemble suffisamment puissant d'ondes de choc peut comprimer et chauffer le carburant au centre tellement que les réactions de fusion se produisent. L'énergie libérée par ces réactions chauffera ensuite le carburant environnant, et si le chauffage est assez fort, cela pourrait également commencer à subir une fusion. L'objectif de l'ICF est de produire une condition appelée «allumage», où ce processus de chauffage entraîne une réaction en chaîne qui brûle une partie importante du carburant.
