Irrémédiable
Irretrievable est l'un des romans allemands avancés réalistes Theodor Fontane. Comme dans le cas des autres romans de Fontane, on pense que son héroïne repose à peu près sur une personne réellement dont la découverte Fontane a entendu parler, et elle traite délicatement des sujets proches du tabou, y compris l'adultère et le suicide. Le roman a été traduit deux fois en anglais. Le premier par Douglas Parmée en 1963 comme Beyond Recall, il a été ré-publié en 2011 par New York Review of Books in Irretrievable. En 2010, une nouvelle traduction anglaise, No Way Back, a été publiée par Angel Classics. Il y a aussi un film allemand fait pour la télévision. En ce qui concerne la traduction de ce roman hantant en anglais, même si on décide d'une traduction pour le titre présente beaucoup de choix en anglais. Les jeux de mots subtils et les motifs linguistiques qui ajoutent à la puissance de son texte allemand sont difficiles à rendre en anglais.
