Islay
Islay, est l'île la plus au sud des Hébrides intérieures d'Écosse. Connu sous le nom de «La Reine des Hébrides», il se trouve à Argyll, juste au sud ouest du Jura, et à environ 40 kilomètres au nord de la côte irlandaise. La capitale de l'île et le plus grand établissement est Bowmore, où se trouvent l'église paroissiale Kilarrow distinctive et une distillerie. Port Ellen est le port principal. Islay est la cinquième plus grande île écossaise et la septième plus grande île entourant la Grande-Bretagne, avec une superficie totale de près de 620 kilomètres carrés. Il existe de nombreuses preuves du règlement préhistorique d'Islay et la première référence écrite peut être venue au 1er siècle après JC. L'île était partie du royaume gaélique de Dál Riata au début du Moyen Âge avant d'être absorbée dans le royaume des îles Normés. La période médiévale tardive a marqué un «point culminant culturel» avec le transfert des Hébrides vers le Royaume d'Écosse et l'émergence de la seigneuriale du Clan Donald des îles, initialement centrée à Finlaggan. Au cours du XVIIe siècle, l'étoile du Clan Donald a diminué, mais les améliorations apportées à l'agriculture et aux transports ont entraîné une augmentation de la population, qui a culminé au milieu du 19ème siècle.
