Ligne de contour
Une ligne de contour d'une fonction de deux variables est une courbe selon laquelle la fonction a une valeur constante. En cartographie, une ligne de contour joint des points d'élévation égaux au-dessus d'un niveau donné, tel que le niveau moyen de la mer. Une carte de contour est une carte illustrée de lignes de contour, par exemple une carte topographique, qui montre ainsi des vallées et des collines, et la pente des pentes. L'intervalle de contour d'une carte de contour est la différence d'élévation entre les lignes de contour successives. Plus généralement, une ligne de contour pour une fonction de deux variables est une courbe de points de connexion où la fonction a la même valeur particulière. Le gradient de la fonction est toujours perpendiculaire aux lignes de contour. Lorsque les lignes sont proches, l'ampleur du dégradé est grande: la variation est raide. Un ensemble de niveau est une généralisation d'une ligne de contour pour les fonctions d'un nombre quelconque de variables. Les lignes de contour sont courbes, droites ou un mélange des deux lignes sur une carte décrivant l'intersection d'une surface réelle ou hypothétique avec un ou plusieurs plans horizontaux.
