Effet Joule-Thomson
Dans la thermodynamique, l'effet Joule-Thomson ou l'effet Joule-Kelvin ou l'effet Kelvin-Joule ou l'expansion Joule-Thomson décrit le changement de température d'un gaz ou d'un liquide lorsqu'il est forcé à travers une soupape ou un bouchon poreux tout en restant isolé de sorte qu'aucune chaleur ne soit Échangé avec l'environnement. Cette procédure s'appelle un processus d'étranglement ou un processus Joule-Thomson. A température ambiante, tous les gaz, à l'exception de l'hydrogène, de l'hélium et du néon, refroidis lors de l'expansion par le procédé Joule-Thomson. L'effet est nommé d'après James Prescott Joule et William Thomson, 1er Baron Kelvin, qui l'ont découvert en 1852. Il a suivi un travail antérieur de Joule sur l'expansion Joule, dans lequel un gaz subit une expansion libre dans le vide et la température est inchangée, si Le gaz est idéal. Le processus d'étranglement est de la plus haute importance technique. C'est au cœur de machines thermiques telles que les réfrigérateurs, les climatiseurs, les pompes à chaleur et les liquéfacteurs. De plus, l'étranglement est un processus fondamentalement irréversible.
