Corps de la cétone
Les corps de la cétone sont trois produits biochimiques solubles dans l'eau qui sont produits par le foie à partir d'acides gras pendant les périodes d'insuffisance alimentaire ou de restriction des glucides pour que les cellules du corps puissent utiliser de l'énergie au lieu du glucose. Deux des trois sont utilisés comme source d'énergie dans le cœur et le cerveau tandis que le troisième est un produit de dégradation du produit de l'acide acétoacétique. Le traçage radioactif de l'acétone détermine que entre 2% et 30% est excrété du corps. Les corps de la cétone sont ramassés par les cellules et converti en acétyl-CoA qui entre ensuite dans le cycle de l'acide citrique et la chaîne de transport d'électrons pour l'énergie. Dans le cerveau, les corps de cétone sont également utilisés pour fabriquer de l'acétyl-CoA dans des acides gras à longue chaîne car les acides gras à longue chaîne ne peuvent pas traverser la barrière hémato-encéphalique. Le foie décompose les protéines pour produire du glucose pendant la famine pour les très faibles cellules obligeant le glucose qui ne peuvent pas utiliser de corps cétone. Dans le cerveau, les corps cétonaux sont une source d'énergie vitale pendant le jeûne ou l'exercice intensif. Bien qu'ils soient «corps», ce sont des molécules, pas des particules. Les trois corps de cétone endogènes sont l'acétone, l'acide acétoacétique et l'acide bêta-hydroxybutyrique.
