Le père de Johann Gottfried, Theophilus Lessing 1647-1735, maire de Kamenz Robert Schumann (compositeur et pianiste 1810-1856) quatre fois grand oncle, Johanne Sophie Susanna Lessing (1745-1818 fille de Carl Heinrich Lessing 1713, trompettiste) de sa grand-mère. ▪ Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781), l'un des philosophes les plus en vue de l'époque des Lumières, reconnu comme le premier dramaturg du monde, le premier dramaturge et comédien de l'Allemagne, champion de la tolérance religieuse, ami de Moses Mendelssohn, critique pour le Vossische Zeitung , Traducteur et savant shakespearien. Aujourd'hui, ses œuvres apparaissent comme des prototypes du drame allemand bourgeois développé.
