Stephen Potter
Stephen Meredith Potter était un auteur britannique plus connu pour ses livres d'auto-assistance et ses dérivés du film et de la télévision. Après avoir quitté l'école dans les derniers mois de la Première Guerre mondiale, il a été chargé d'un officier subalterne dans l'armée britannique, mais au moment où il a terminé sa formation, la guerre était terminée et il a été démobilisé. Il a ensuite étudié l'anglais à Oxford et, après de faux débuts, il a passé sa vie professionnelle au début comme universitaire, enseignant dans la littérature anglaise au Birkbeck College, une partie de l'Université de Londres, pendant laquelle il a publié plusieurs travaux sur Samuel Taylor Coleridge. En trouvant son revenu insuffisant pour se soutenir à lui-même et à sa famille, il a quitté l'université et a occupé un poste de production et d'écriture pour la BBC. Il est resté avec la BBC jusqu'à la Seconde Guerre mondiale, quand il est devenu un écrivain indépendant, et l'est resté pour le reste de sa vie. Sa série de livres humoristiques sur la façon de sécuriser un avantage injuste a commencé en 1947 avec Gamesmanship, ce qui a pour but de montrer comment les joueurs pauvres peuvent battre les meilleurs par des tactiques psychologiques subtiles. Cela a vendu prodigieusement et conduit à une série de séquelles couvrant d'autres aspects de la vie.
