Un mot de prêt est un mot emprunté à une langue de donneur et incorporé dans une langue de destinataire directement, sans traduction. Il peut être distingué d'un calque, ou d'une traduction de prêt, où une signification ou un idiome d'une autre langue est traduit en mots ou racines existants de la langue hôte. Exemples de mots de prêt en anglais: café, bazar et jardin d'enfants. Curieusement, le mot loanword est lui-même un calque du terme allemand Lehnwort, alors que le terme calque est un mot prêt du français.
